Winter Update: Mission Teams
This winter season we were blessed to have three mission teams join us for their Spring Break. Traditionally Spring Break is very difficult to get students to come to Detroit because of the cold but thankfully the weather held and we were successfully able to host Athletes in Action from the University of Michigan, Michigan State’s Spartan Christian Fellowship and InterVarsity from Grand Valley State University.
Over an exciting two weeks these teams helped us care for our community and opened the door to have deeper conversations with neighbors about the Lord. At the new Mack Avenue Community Church building they helped clean an empty lot that was used for dumping within an eyeshot of our new church. The local neighborhood children also joined in and grabbed rakes and gloves because they wanted to help out.
Another team helped someone take down a garage that would be a huge safety problem for the expecting family for years to come. Slowly but surely over 12 hours the teams worked diligently to not only take down the entire garage but clean up the backyard to the point it was almost hard to remember a garage was there when the day started.
Each team came into Detroit with a servant’s heart and this enabled them to see things and hear stories about Detroit that many seem to miss. They also experienced powerful teachings on Poverty, Education, Leadership and Discipleship by leaders in our own body. They walked away exhausted from a hard week of work but strengthened spiritually.
