Spring Update: MACC Lit
Hello! My name is Alyce Hartman. I’m the new Program Manager for MACC Lit. It’s an exciting time! Summer is right around the corner and camp is starting soon!
The kids and I will be following a Junior Master Gardener study, called, Learn, Grow, Eat & Go! The JMG mission is “to grow good kids by igniting a passion for learning, success, and service.”
LGEG is “hands-on, multifaceted, and academically rich. It incorporates the best practices identified by research and combines the interdisciplinary elements of nutrition, garden science, physical activity, food preparation, and fresh vegetable tastings to improve the health and wellness of children, families, and the school community.”
Our little campers will use the LGEG science program to learn about plants – why they are important to us, how to grow a garden, and how to give plants what they need to thrive.
While learning how to provide for plants’ needs, the students will also learn how plants provide for our needs. The lessons will use math, science, language arts, health, and social studies concepts to help the students understand how plants help us live, grow, learn, and play.
In addition to the Learn, Grow, Eat & Go! Curriculum, we will also focus, daily, on literacy engagement in the following 5 key areas:
· Easy Reading
· Instructional Reading
· Words, Spelling and Phonics
Each child will be given responsibilities at camp and there will be rewards, throughout the summer, for attendance, hard work, and encouragement.
All of our field trips include educational and character building components that compliment the LGEG curriculum. Our travels will take us to Calder Farm, Ann Arbor Matthai Botanical Garden, The Adventure Park at West Bloomfield, Cranbrook Institute of Science, and Recycle Here!
We will also be worshiping and studying the Word of God, every day. Our devotion time will help our little campers grow in their understanding of the importance of staying in His presence and His Word as a means of spiritual nourishment that enables us to grow in Christ.
Learn, Grow, Eat & Go! is a 10 week unit of study, we’ll be working hard to complete in just 6 weeks. We’ve named and registered our garden – The Garden of Eatin’ – with the Junior Master Gardener program. Upon completion of the unit of study, our little campers will receive recognition and Learn, Grow, Eat & Go! Certification!
Camp starts on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 and ends on Thursday, August 17, 2017. We meet, Tuesday-Thursday from 9AM-4PM. Volunteers are needed to assist with our day-to-day operations and chaperone field trips. Please let me know if you are able to lend hand.
And we have a new Macc Lit Summer Assistant Program Manager…. Maggie Rohweder. Welcome to the team, Maggie! It’s going to be a great year!
Peace and Love,
MACC Lit Program Manager
