Fall Update: The Commons and Mack Lot
The Commons, a project of MACC Development, is a coin laundry & coffee shop which has drawn a lot of media attention. The building that houses The Commons and MACC Development’s community center has been under construction and is expected to be open in summer 2017.
More recently, MACC Development with input from neighbors, block clubs, community associations, and churches designed an outdoor space that would “be something which supports beautification of the neighborhood and be an inviting outdoor space for customers, neighbors, and visitors at The Commons.”
The Mack Lot will be built on a small piece of property, between The Commons and D&D Moving and Storage buildings on Mack and Van Dyke, in Detroit’s eastside.
MACC Development led the project with support from City Form Detroit, MAde Studio and Giffles Webster with funding from the Kresge Foundation.
“Mack Avenue was once a thriving retail strip with many stores, service businesses, and nightclubs, after decades of neglect, the community decided it needs some perking up. A laundromat, a place to have coffee with outdoor space is really needed in the neighborhood” is what one neighbor expressed.
The Commons is already located at a community hub on Mack Ave and Van Dyke. The community park will be a natural addition and feature new benches, a children’s play area, mural, and a stage for live performances.
We’re excited to begin pursuing supporters to make this community dream come true. To learn more about the process, design and strategy moving forward check out the Mack Lot booklet here.
